Acrnym – Flowers, an electronic treasure

I discovered Acrnym and his album “Flowers” on Last.fm some time ago, and it has become one of my most treasured electronic albums. It’s one of those albums that grows whenever I listen to it. In the beginning it was only the first track (“Kate says aye”) that really moved me, and believe me it still does – I perceive the first track as some of the finest breakcore I’ve heard to this date – however the rest of the album is solid electronic craftsmanship. What I really appreciate about this album is his sparse use of voice samples – there’s a few of them, but they are subtle and cool (“fatality!”). There’s no annoying reggae guy trying to ruin my IDM with his singing, only solid synthesizer work with a wicked drum line throughout the album, and a little bit of 8-bit flavor.

The album was released in 2007 on Sublight Records, but I can’t find any information about it – getting the album was actually pretty difficult. Artists, if you ever make good music, please release it online! I get all my music from emusic.com and occasionally from itunes. If it’s not in either of those shops, I will not support you with a purchase!

Anyway, an interesting facet of the Flowers album: Track 10 “Knife” ends with a sample from the Venetian Snares album Rossz Csillag Allat Született.

Hi friend, welcome to yet another blogging experiment from yours truly.

This time, it’s about music, because I’ve realized that I listen to a lot of odd music. In fact, when I synchronized my new iPod touch, I found that not a single artist on my entire library was considered mainstream. It’s not because I dislike mainstream music, I just enjoy traveling into the small corners of experimental sub-genres.

This blog will be about the music I listen to, and I will try my best to review all those small jewels I find.

The music I will cover here will most likely be in the experimental electronic genre – I like breakcore, IDM and the occasional japanese noise (a la merzbow) – or in the folky genre – I like Comus, Linda Perhacs, 16 Horsepower, Woven Hands, The Mountain Goats.

I do listen to mostly electronic stuff these days, so I guess most will be about that.
